Hackspace party tonight! (28th July)

Come along and do stuff tonight at Old Broadcasting House!

As usual there will be the range of hardware and software tomfoolery from faffing with LEDs to mash-ups of Leeds’ historical data. Also robots.

Tonight we shall incorporate Leeds Hack Space as a company and take stock of how much cash we’ve raised so far through the raffle… and then see where this puts us on the quest to get that permanent space.

Hackspace Party Tomorrow

This is a reminder for the bi-weekly hack party at OBH tomorrow!
(Tomorrow is Tuesday 30th June, 6pm-8:30pm).

I hope to see you all there. We have a lot to talk about…

– Fund raising! After the success of the pledges 2 weeks ago we need to
chase up any outstanding monies, and plot our next money-making
scheme.

– Hack spaces! This week there have been three potential spaces
investigated. Two city centre office-type environments and one soon-to-
be-renovated garage in Holbeck. We shall feed back information, photos
and maths to all who want to listen.

– Software projects! An exciting plan of action has come out of the
recent discussions around a local social history resource and making
greater use of community resources (e.g. Leodis.net). I have invited a
few people along to try drum up some enthusiasm, and to get cracking
on the first of many exciting web-based projects.

– Hardware hacking! MORE ROBOTS. Robots are cool.

– Curry! There’s a few of us heading out for curry afterwards. Fancy
joining us?

See you tomorrow.

PledgeBank

While at the last GeekUp, it was mentioned that a good way to get donations would be to set up a pledge. The idea is that people will pledge a certain amount of money as long as the pledge meets a certain set of criteria.

So, we’ve set one up at http://www.pledgebank.com/LeedsHackspace.

Heres the deal. I have pledged that, as soon as at least 20 people sign the pledge, I, and any signatories, will pay £20 to Hackspace::Leeds.

Please help us raise funds by signing the pledge, so we can keep moving forward with the project and have a permanent space where we can all meet up, socialise, collaborate and hack on projects.

First Meeting Summary (by Oomlout)

We Came, We Talked, We Plotted Leeds-wide Domination.

The first meeting of the Leeds Hackspace was a resounding success. We talked about our plans for the space, some of the challenges we may encounter, and just generally hung out and had a good time in the company of cool people. We also drew up plans for a Leeds-wide invasion but more details on that in future posts.

What We Did:

We didn’t hash out too many concrete plans (that’s what future meetings are for), but the details of our planned projects and space requirements can be found on our wiki.

What’s to come: (Next Meeting Details)

Buisnessy Items: (May 5 6-7 at Old Broadcasting House)
Our next meeting is planned for two weeks time at Old Broadcasting House. Its going to be broken into two sections, if your interested in helping us decide the admin details of the Hack Space come from 6-7 where we’ll go over the business end of things, such as space selection and financing ideas.

Break Out the Arduino Fun: (May 5 7-8:30 at Old Broadcasting House)

The Second half of the meeting will be an Arduino fun night. So if you’ve done cool stuff with an Arduino bring it along to show off. If you’ve heard about Arduino and would like to find out more we’ll have a few extras kicking around so bring yourself and we’ll find someone to help you get started. If you don’t know what an Arduino is that’s okay, come along and hang out. More details on what we have planned will follow.

First Leeds Hackspace Meet

I’m proud to announce the first Leeds Hackspace meetup will be on Tuesday 21st April @ Old Broadcasting House.

The meeting will start at around 6pm and go on till around 8.30pm at which time I expect some of us will be wandering elsewhere for a few drinks if anybody cares to join us. We will have access to the projector, the whiteboard, wireless and power sockets for whoever needs them.

So bring yourselves, bring your toys and projects and have fun, we hope to see you there.

Where Do We Go From Here?

After bringing Hackspace up in the Leeds2600 meet last week, the main questions were: “whats next?”, “how can I help out?” and decided this would be a good area to expand on.

The idea for the next couple of weeks is to start arranging regular meetups where all interested parties can come along, meet each other, discuss and hack on projects they find interesting, whether its something new brought up during the meets, or just something they’ve been wanting to work on but haven’t had the time.

Assuming everything goes to plan and there is enough interest in the project, we will begin discussing location, infrastructure and possibly most importantly, funding (through e.g. membership when we get to that stage) as a community.

I will be looking around Leeds this week looking for places that wouldn’t mind hosting a meeting that has free Wifi and hopefully power so we can get started. Feel free to recommend places so I’m not wandering around Leeds blind, either through comments here, sending a tweet to leedshackspace or leaving a Group message.

For those who want to help out, what we really need for the time being is more support. If we’re going to get this off the ground we’re going to need people. So, keep passing on the word, keep retweeting, keep thinking up and putting forward ideas on the mailing list on our Google Group.
